Australian Government Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment
You may be eligible for the Australian Government’s Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment if you test positive and lose income or earnings because you are directed to isolate. You may also be eligible if you are a carer of someone who has tested positive.
This payment is based on the number of hours of work you lose or expect to lose during isolation of up to seven days:
- You can receive $750 if you have lost or expect to lose 20 hours or more of work.
- You can receive $450 if you have lost or expect to lose at least a day of work or up to 19 hours.

If you are not eligible for this payment, Services Australia will provide advice that you can use to apply for the Tasmanian Government’s Pandemic Isolation Assistance Grant for close contacts and positive cases, as detailed below.
There are no age or liquid assets tests for the Pandemic Isolation Assistance Grant.
Tasmanian Government Pandemic Isolation Assistance Grant
If you cannot access the Australian Government’s Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment, you may be eligible for a $750 Tasmanian Government Pandemic Isolation Assistance Grant.
You must be:
- a confirmed case with COVID-19; or
- required to care for a dependant who is a confirmed case.
This payment is available for isolation or quarantine periods beginning on or after 3 December 2021.
You can only receive the payment once as a positive case yourself. You can receive it multiple times as a carer for a positive case, but only once in a 60-day period.
If you or the person you are caring for have ongoing symptoms and need to isolate for longer than seven days, you can apply to receive a further payment. A medical certificate can be provided as evidence.
You must meet the following criteria:
- be a Tasmanian resident
- be able to demonstrate that you have lost income or earnings
- have exhausted paid sick leave or carers leave entitlements
- not be receiving Australian Government income support or the Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment for the relevant seven-day quarantine period.

Close contact evidence
From 2 May 2022, close contacts are not required to quarantine except in very limited circumstances. If you work in a high-risk setting but are not identified as a critical worker, you may be unable to work if you are a close contact of a positive case.
If you work in a high-risk setting but are not identified as a critical worker and are notified by a positive case or self-identify as a close contact, you can provide the following evidence that you meet the definition of a close contact:
- the name and address of the positive case you live with or have spent more than 4 hours with in a household setting
- evidence of living in the same household as the positive case such as driver’s licence, lease arrangement, utility bill etc
- the positive case’s evidence from Public Health
- evidence that you work in a high-risk setting but are not identified as a critical worker.
