Wastewater testing has detected fragments of COVID-19 in a sample taken on Tuesday 5 October from Macquarie Point, in the Hobart area.
The Macquarie Point sewage treatment plant services the Fountainside Hotel, where a current positive COVID-19 case is staying. It is likely that this result is linked to this positive case.
Positive wastewater results can also indicate there is a case in the community or someone who continues to shed the COVID 19 virus after they have recovered from the infection.
Although Public Health believes the result is related to the current case, it is important that the community continues to be vigilant and if you have symptoms, isolate and get tested.
Vaccination remains the greatest defence against coronavirus. Any Tasmanian aged 16 years and over who hasn’t yet had a COVID-19 vaccination should book an appointment online, or by calling the Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738.
