Approved airports and small aircraft

Flying into Tasmania

The Deputy State Controller has prohibited any aeroplane or aircraft whose flight commences outside Tasmania from landing (other than in the case of an emergency or with prior consent) at any place within Tasmania other than at approved airports:

Approved airports (for low, medium and high risk arrivals)

  • Hobart International (Strachan Street, Cambridge)
  • Cambridge Aerodrome (115 Kennedy Drive, Cambridge)
  • Launceston (201 Evandale Road, Western Junction, Launceston)
  • Devonport (Airport Road, Devonport)
  • Burnie (3 Airport Street, Wynyard)
  • King Island (Morrison Avenue, Loorana)
  • Flinders Island (122 Palana Road, Whitemark)

Please note that there are arrival restrictions to arriving at King Island or Flinders Island if you are subject to quarantine in a government-managed quarantine facility. See Travelling to Tasmania’s islands for more information.

Restricted airports (for low risk arrivals only)

  • Low risk arrivals only – Smithton Airport (347 Montagu Road, Smithton)
  • Low risk arrivals only – Bridport Airport (Bridport Road, Bridport)
  • Low risk arrivals only – Strahan Airport (Macquarie Heads Road, Strahan)
  • Low risk arrivals only – St Helens Aerodrome (Aerodrome Road, Stieglitz)
  • Low risk arrivals only – Barnbougle Airstrip (425 Waterhouse Road, Bridport)

Any person who has spent time in a medium or high risk area in the 14 days before travelling to Tasmania can only land at one of the seven approved airports.

Providing notice of arrival

From 11:59pm, 31 March 2021, the pilot of an aircraft that does not have a flight schedule that is publicly available online (e.g. on a commercial aircraft or flight service’s webpage) must provide 24 hours’ notice of their expected arrival into Tasmania to Biosecurity Tasmania.

All passengers and crew on board the aircraft should have a valid Tas e-Travel pass before entering Tasmania.

Information to be provided by the pilot to includes:

  • Name and contact details for the airline operator (where applicable);
  • Name and contact details for the pilot in command of the aircraft;
  • Names and contact details for everyone on board the aircraft (including crew);
  • Description of the aircraft;
  • The location from which the flight is departing prior to travelling to Tasmania;
  • Intended time, date and location of arrival in Tasmania;
  • Identities of any person who intends to disembark the aircraft and leave the airport on arrival in Tasmania.

This information is used to monitor the movement of people into Tasmania according to the Directions in Relation to Persons Arriving in Tasmania, which are in place to manage the spread of COVID-19 into Tasmania.

Any changes to the aircraft details in the 24 hours prior to arrival must be disclosed to Biosecurity Tasmania prior to entry.

Biosecurity Tasmania will confirm receipt of the information via return email and will advise whether the aircraft may proceed as planned. Passengers and crew who intend to leave the aircraft to enter Tasmania will be contacted within 24 hours of arriving by Biosecurity Tasmania, to finalise the arrival process.

Aircraft may only arrive at a place outside the above approved airports if the Deputy State Controller has provided prior approval, or if it is an emergency or essential to refuel.

In an emergency or essential refuelling situation, the pilot of the aircraft must immediately report their updated aircraft details to Biosecurity Tasmania via

A person may only disembark an aircraft outside the approved airports if the person has prior approval from the Deputy State Controller, or if it is an emergency.

Anyone who disembarks outside of the approved airports may be required to quarantine for 14 days in government-managed quarantine facility (fees may apply), unless they elect to leave Tasmania.
